#110 - St. Jerome

This charming 19th century Mexican folk retablo depicts "San Jeronimo," one of the most highly revered images in Mexican folk and retablo art. San Jeronimo, patron saint of philosophers and scholars, is almost always depicted as he is here; as a hermit with a lion and symbols of penance before him. He is usually accompanied by a crucifix, a skull, a scourge, a book and his attributable lion.
