#56 - Santa Eduviges

Santa Eduviges, one of the most obscure subjects in retablo art, is patroness saint of Bavaria, brides, jealousy and difficult marriages. She was known mostly for her generosity, bestowing all that she could give to the sick, the feeble, the impoverished and the imprisoned. It was this bountiful quality of gift for which she was most commonly recognized.

In addition to the unique symbolic values, this retablo is also a beautiful work of 19th century Mexican folk art. The palette, filled with deep royal reds, golden apricot yellow and ivory white, is lovely.

Dimensions are 14" x 10."

Condition: excellent - completely original and unrestored.
